The Pennsylvania Dutch are not actually Dutch at all. Pennsylvania Dutch is actually Pennsylvania Deutsch, or German. The Amish are a religious group who live in settlements in 22 states; the oldest group of Old Order Amish, live in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Although Lancaster Amish are Pennsylvania Dutch, all Pennsylvania Dutch are not Amish. Although the Amish look
like they stepped out of the rural nineteenth century, in fact they do
change. They choose to examine change carefully before they accept it.
If the new idea or gadget does not assist in keeping their lives simple
and their families together, they probably will reject it. |

The Battlefield at Gettysburg is a National Millitary Park, and has been really well organized for the historically inclined. The Auto Tour takes you through the three days of the battle, where you see the different points where the armies clashed. The monuments you see (like the cannons, horses and monoliths on the right) represent the actual positions of actual regiments. The shape and form represent the type and affiliation of the squad. The last two pictures are a monument to the Gettysburg address, as well as unknown soldier graves at Gettysburg cemetary. The battle left so many dead that they were left strewn across the battlefield until the Union authorized a burial effort in the place that became Gettysburg cemetary. |
